Why do employers give pre-employment tests?
You should gather all your medical history, this can include immunization records, all previous medical history if you have undergone any surgeries and what was done, and any information regarding what the employer is expecting to see from your physical. If you have anything, such as glasses, or hearing aids, it is also important to bring these with you, as well, as any medications you are currently taking.
During your pre-employment exam, you can expect the physician to go over the aforementioned information in detail with you, so they have a deep understanding and can transfer this information with as much detail to the employer. Your physician will also go over with you what is going to be done during your pre-employment exam, as multiple tests may done based on the requirements of the job and what the employer is looking for in their candidate. Some employers will have you undergo tests for stamina to determine if you can handle stress, and some employers will have the candidate undergo drug screenings if the job involves working with things such as heavy equipment or those who fall into the vulnerable sector considerations, such as those who will work with youth or elders.
A lot of what is going to be covered in the exam is similar to testing patients will have during annual physicals or school physicals, the only time that this may be different is based on factors of what the employer is looking for. Because of this, it is recommended to wear loose-fitted clothing to the physical, as well as comfortable shoes that you would normally wear when jogging, if you are going to have a stamina and cardiovascular examination done for your pre-employment physical.
The questions you will be asked at the physical will be similar to the questions you are asked at annual check-ups, but they will go into more detail with you regarding these questions to gather as much information as possible about your current health, and any previous health conditions. The physician may also go into detail with you about any injuries you have had whether they resulted in surgery, or if you have had a cast, to determine not only the cause of the injury but how the injury has healed. They may also ask you about other factors, such as your current lifestyle, whether you live an active lifestyle, or a sedentary lifestyle, as these factors can contribute to the information they will gather from testing your blood pressure and heart rate. The physician will also go over any medications or supplements you are taking, the reason you are taking these, and if your family history has any conditions such as cancer or hypertension as this information is also important.
During your pre-employment physical, you can expect the physician to measure your height and weigh you, along with other testing such as monitoring your heart rate and testing your blood pressure. Other tests will be done based on the information the employer is looking for, such as blood tests to determine if there has been drug use recently, assessments the neurological function, and assessments of the cardiovascular system, which is known as a stamina test. These tests are done to not only determine if you are a good candidate for the job, but also to determine the safety of the work for yourself, and the safety of those you would be working with.
Employers request physical pre-employment exams from candidates to determine that they can safely do the job that is expected of them, without risking themselves or those that they will be working with. Employers may also require these tests due to legislation regarding the job you are applying for, and to streamline the employment process, as there could be potential for other candidates who seem well suited for the job to be physically unable to perform the tasks involved with the job.
