4 Questions to Ask about Pre-Employment Physical Exam
A pre-employment physical exam is a health check conducted to ensure that a potential employee is physically capable of performing the duties required by their job role. This exam may include tests for physical abilities, vision, and hearing checks, and possibly screenings for drugs and alcohol. Physical tests for jobs are based on certain factors of the job you applied for, as in some situations employers want to make sure you are physically capable of doing the job, and also to reduce the risk of on-site or on-the-job injuries. These tests can include testing your vision, a physical test, a stamina test, drug tests, and psychological tests. You will be informed of what tests you are expected to undergo from the employer, and in some cases, this information may be given in the job posting you applied to. It is important to note that employers do these tests not to eliminate potential employees, but to make sure that there is no potential of injuring yourself or others when you are working.
There are also general pre-employment physicals that will only go over your current body weight, blood pressure, respiratory function, and vision. This can also include other testing, such as your range of motion, or hearing. Some employers will have their employees undergo regular physical testing yearly to evaluate their health and make sure that there have been no major changes in certain situations. The physician doing your pre-employment exam will also go over information with you such as your medical history, any medications you are taking, if you have any pre-existing conditions, and any past injuries that you have experienced if they have warranted medical intervention, such as surgery.
Employers may require this just to have a general understanding of the health of the person they are looking to employ, whereas some may require physical exams to determine your job readiness. Some jobs are high-stress environments so conditions like high blood pressure could eliminate the candidacy for the job purely for the safety of the candidate, whereas in other jobs such as jobs involving driving you are expected to have a certain level of vision to be eligible. These exams are included in the consideration of hiring candidates as in many companies safety of their employees is very important, whereas in some other jobs, it is about the safety of the general public. Patients should not be offended by this requirement, as if employers have this as a requirement for employment this is because there have potentially been situations previously that have led to this decision, or it is based on the legislature surrounding the job as well. Some jobs require the use of heavy equipment that carries a high risk of injury which is why they may have drug screening included in the physical examination of the candidate.
The duration of the exam can vary based on factors such as what testing the candidate is expected to undergo, such as stamina testing, but the average amount of time pre-employment physicals take is around 30 minutes. The candidate needs to make sure they accommodate the time expected for the physical, while also giving themselves more time in case the examination takes longer, or there is a delay in getting into the appointment.
There are some situations where you could potentially fail a pre-employment physical exam and high blood pressure can eliminate a candidate from the job if this is what the employer is looking to avoid. There are also some jobs where having low blood pressure can also eliminate you from being hired for a job, but this is all based on the employer and their decisions of what they are looking for in employees. It is important to remember as the patient undergoing these tests for the job candidacy that there is no true “failing” of physical testing, it is only based on what the employer is looking for in their employees not what your doctor sees during these tests.
